After graduating from college Harry Burns and Sally Albright share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York, during which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends. As their paths continue to cross over the years and their friendship grows they are confronted with the problem of whether they can remain friends without sex getting in the way.
